Belfast’s Defensive Grit Not Enough Against KalPa
Belfast’s Defensive Grit Not Enough Against KalPa

Belfast Giants made their CHL debut with a thrilling contest against Finland’s KalPa, falling 3-2 in overtime after a gutsy defensive performance. The home side struck early, with Patrick Grasso scoring inside the first minute to electrify the SSE Arena crowd. KalPa quickly levelled, and while both teams traded chances and penalties, Giants goalie Alexis Gravel stood tall with a series of key saves to keep it 1-1 after the first.

The second period saw Belfast regain the lead as Ryan Smith pounced on a rebound, making it 2-1. Gravel continued to impress, shutting down KalPa power plays and keeping the Finns at bay. A dramatic video review at the end of the period denied KalPa a tying goal, sending the Giants into the third with a slim lead.

The final period was tense, with KalPa pressing hard. Gravel made more crucial stops, but the visitors broke through with just over a minute left, tying the game and forcing overtime. Only 80 seconds in, KalPa caught the Giants on the break, Patrick Curry netting the winner to seal the Finnish side’s comeback.

Despite the loss, Belfast showed resilience and promise on the European stage. They’ll look to bounce back against Ilves Tampere in their next home CHL fixture.
