Peterborough Team Overview.

Club History and Performance Statistics.

Ice hockey in Peterborough traces its roots back to late 1981, a pivotal moment when the city welcomed the first UK ice rink built since the 1960s. This development ignited the formation of the Peterborough Pirates in the summer of 1982.

The Pirates quickly established themselves as formidable competitors, reaching the 1991 championship play-off final at Wembley. Their momentum saw them return to the final in 1992, but as the 1990s unfolded, the team faced mounting challenges. The emergence of new teams only intensified the competition, and the Pirates found it increasingly difficult to replicate their early successes.

In 2002, the Pirates era ended, paving the way for the Peterborough Phantoms, who took to the ice in the English Premier Ice Hockey League (EPIHL). The Phantoms made an immediate impact, achieving a league and Cup double in their debut season and retaining the Cup the following year. Their momentum continued with a Knockout Cup triumph in 2007–08, culminating in a remarkable 2008–09 season when they secured all three major honours. After the EPIHL's dissolution in 2017, the Phantoms joined the National Ice Hockey League (NIHL), continuing Peterborough's proud ice hockey tradition.

Under the guidance of head coach Ashley Tait, the Peterborough Phantoms continued to uphold the city’s legacy of competitive ice hockey. Their regular season saw them finish 5th in the league standings. Building on this foundation, the Phantoms embarked on an impressive playoff run, navigating a series of fixtures to reach the final. Although they ultimately fell just short of claiming the championship, finishing as runners-up, the team’s performance underscored their determination and promise for the seasons ahead.

Highlighting individual excellence, Cameron Hough emerged as a prolific scorer during the regular season, netting an impressive 54 goals in 52 games. The Phantoms also benefited from the creative mastery of Janne Laakkonen, whose remarkable tally of 75 assists in just 42 games elevated the team’s offensive play. Topping the points leaderboard was Luke Ferrar, who amassed an outstanding 94 points across 52 regular season appearances.

When the playoffs arrived, the spotlight shone on Nathan Salem, who played in all eight postseason games, finding the back of the net seven times and notching a total of 10 points. Austin Mitchell-Long proved instrumental in setting up scoring opportunities, recording seven assists in as many games. On the defensive side, Jarvis Hunt led the team in penalty minutes throughout the playoff run, collecting 12 penalty points.

Between the pipes, Hayden Lavigne anchored the Phantoms’ defence with remarkable consistency throughout the season, making 49 appearances and posting a stellar save percentage of 90.71%. Supporting him, Luke Clark offered reliable backup in the regular campaign, taking to the ice nine times and registering a save percentage of 81.10%. As the stakes heightened in the playoffs, Lavigne remained the clear choice in goal, suiting up for all eight postseason contests and maintaining an impressive 90.58% save rate—a testament to his composure under pressure and vital role in the Phantoms’ playoff journey.
