In Part two of this series and as Skater Hockey continues to expand in Uganda, we had the opportunity to interview SSEKAANA AMON MATTHEW, a dedicated athlete and advocate for the sport. In this detailed discussion, Mr. Matthew provides insight into his personal journey, the unwavering commitment of Ugandan hockey enthusiasts, and the future prospects for the community.

Could you please introduce yourself to those who may not be familiar with you?
My name is SSEKAANA AMON MATTHEW. I was born on 15 January 1998 and raised in Mukono town. During my upbringing, I resided with my mother and grandmother. From an early age, I was drawn to sports and technology. My interest in foreign languages, particularly Spanish, was influenced by the music of Selena Quintanilla. Additionally, I enjoyed reading literature concerning World War One.
What is your background in hockey?
As previously mentioned, I have always had a passion for sports. While traversing my hometown, I encountered a Canadian couple who operated an organisation dedicated to supporting mothers. Our friendship began due to my proficiency in English, which enabled effective communication. They welcomed me into their home and introduced me to their children. It was during a “hockey Saturday” event that I first participated in the sport, which immediately resonated with me. Since that initial experience, I have been committed to hockey and continue to play.
What motivated you to become involved in the sport?
Having developed a deep appreciation for hockey, I recognised the value in introducing the sport to a broader Ugandan audience, rather than keeping the experience to myself. Accordingly, I have actively engaged in teaching and promoting hockey within my community.
How would you describe training and matches for yourself and the hockey community in Uganda?
I provide two distinct forms of training: ball hockey and inline hockey. In 2024, we organised a ball hockey tournament, which was won by the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). The 2022 tournament was claimed by the team, Legends. Our training sessions are rigorous, reflecting the commitment and perseverance of all participants. The continued development in both ball and inline hockey attests to the hard work and dedication within the community.
Do you have access to any support or funding?
At present, I do not have any formal funding sources. Sustaining the sport in Uganda has required considerable personal effort, despite various challenges. Every achievement thus far has been the result of my own initiative. Nevertheless, financial support is imperative for further growth and outreach.
What resources are required to prioritise the growth of the game?
To facilitate the expansion of hockey in Uganda, adequate equipment, substantial funding, and additional coaches are essential. These resources will enable broader participation and elevate the overall standard of the sport.
Have you received significant attention and support recently?
While I have received notable attention, actual support has been limited. There is a prevailing sense that our efforts are recognised yet lack tangible assistance. Although the acknowledgment is appreciated, further support would have a substantial impact.
What events are coming up for hockey in Uganda over the next month?
We are in the process of organising a tournament to inaugurate the 2026 activity calendar. Anticipation is high for an increased number of hockey games throughout the year, which is expected to further energise both players and supporters. The steadfast dedication and resilience of the Ugandan hockey community are encouraging as we collectively strive for growth.
SSEKAANA’s trajectory exemplifies the passion and perseverance that underpin the rise of skater hockey in Uganda. With appropriate support and resources, the sport is well positioned to continue its progress, offering enjoyment and opportunity to an expanding number of Ugandans.
I would like to to thank SSEKAANA for taking the time to answer these question on behalf of Over The Bench Sports Blog. If you would like to reach out or help get involved with equipment, Please head to these pages below on Instagram and show your support:
